About the Site

The idea for this website was developed by James Miller, Livia Kohn and Louis Komjathy at Boston University in April, 2000. We wanted to create an electronic space where any Daoism scholar can present research ideas, teaching aids etc, and we wanted to promote the study of Daoism as a contemporary world religion as well as a historic element within traditional Chinese culture. The site is funded entirely by a Boston University research grant and is designed, maintained and edited by James Miller.

What is Daoist Studies?
From the perspective of Daoist Studies, the scholarly study of Daoism is not confined to examining it as a historical movement that forms part of Chinese culture, though clearly this is a major research focus of modern scholars. Additionally, Daoist Studies recognizes that Daoism is a living world religion that exists authentically in Toronto and Seattle just as much as in Taipei and Singapore.
What services does the site offer?
- Publication
The site publishes information on research and teaching Daoism. If you have information you wish to publish, please join the community. - Conference Planning

The current Daoist Studies bibliography contains over 1700 entries. Members of the community are able to add new entries or correct existing entries.
Who is involved?
www.daoiststudies.org is an electronic publishing community that aims to further Daoist Studies. So far we have contributors from China, North America, France and Russia. The site was set up, and is run by, a small group of people based in North America, but we hope to make this a truly international joint venture.
