Abstract

The exhibition "Masques de Chine. Rites magiques de Nuo" is at the Musee Jacquemart-Andre, Paris, from March 14 - to August 26, 2007. The wooden masks in this show, dating from the 17th to the 19th century, illustrate the mysterious Nuo magic rituals in China. In ancient China, shamans wore masks when exorcising demons. These masks survived into the Ming and Qing periods, though they underwent changes, notably through the influence of Buddhism and Taoism.
