| Abstract | A - review of painter Pat Steir's exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center in Des Moines, Iowa. This show picks up on the previously established theme of the relationship between Steir's drip paintings, suggestive of waterfalls, and the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism. It includes The Wave after Courbet as though Painted by Turner with Chinese in Mind, in which humor and homage commingle so much that the viewer is in danger of getting lost trying to sort out the references and may miss the sincere evocation of the Romantic sublime that is at the heart of the painting. The subtlety of her most recent works is perhaps a harbinger of things to come. |
